Study of Networking Operating System (NOS)


A Brief INTRODUCTION

NOS is an abbreviation to Networking Operating System.  It is the software which simply adds features into the normal operating system, we can call it as the add on which enhances overall network features.  It is an operating system that is designed to support workstation, personal computer and other devices attached/connected in a LAN.  The examples for this type of operating systems are Artisoft's LANtastic, Banyan VINES, Novell's NetWare, and Microsoft's LAN Manager.  Similarly, we have well known operating systems that can be treated as Network Operating Systems namely Windows NT and Digital’s Open VMS.  These are treated so because they have extra networking features as compared to some other windows operating system editions.  The computers using this operating system typically act as a server.

What are the features of Network Operating System?
When we talk about the features of Network Operating system they are as follows:-
1.       Printer sharing facility must be there.
2.      Application sharing adds much power to the network performance.
3.      Common file system and Database sharing.
4.      Managing a Network Name Directory.
5.      It should be highly secured.
6.      Housekeeping in terms of a networking.
What are the applications of Network Operating System?
The applications provided by this Operating System vary from the way we are using it.
1.       It provides account administration to the users.
2.      Highly secured.
3.      File and printer sharing
4.      User administration.
5.      Backing-Up of Data.
6.      Server functionality.
7.      Client functionality.
These are some of the applications provided by this very network operating system.

What are the Disadvantages of Network Operating System?
Although NOS provides various facilities and it proves to be highly advantageous but it has various drawbacks. The various disadvantages are listed here:-
1.       Problems like torrent downloading arise.
2.      Troubleshooting problem
3.      Decentralized- No specific server in case of peer-to-peer.
4.      Expensive- Needs initial cost for dedicated server.


So, this is the Case Study of the Network Operating System and various advantages and disadvantages of the NOS.
